Edgar Allan Poe's (1809-1849) literarisches Werk hat mich schon immer beeindruckt, vor allem wie seine Lyrik sich fast selbstverständlich in Musik einschmiegen lässt. Die Atmosphäre im Gedicht 'The Haunted Palace' (der Spukpalast) ist sehr speziell und ich habe versucht, sie für diese Komposition aufzufangen. Das Stück beginnt relativ tonal, freudvoll, mit warmen Harmonien und Melodien, wird aber gegen Ende plötzlich dunkel und entfernt sich vom Tonalen wenn es im Text heisst 'but evil things, in robes of sorrow, assailed the monarch's high estate.' (Frei übersetzt: aber Böses, im Trauergewand, bestürmte des Monarchen nobles Anwesen).
The Haunted Palace ist meiner Tochter Kelsey Plog gewidmet.

I have always been impressed with the writings of Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849), and how his poetry seems to lend itself so well to music. The Haunted Palace is a poem that has a very distinct atmosphere, and I have tried to capture that atmosphere in this composition. The piece begins with relatively tonal, joyful, and warm harmonies and melodies, and then suddenly becomes dark and far less tonal towards the end of the work when the text changes to 'but evil things, in robes of sorrow, assailed the monarch's high estate.' The Haunted Palace is dedicated to my daughter Kelsey Plog.

J'ai toujours été impressionné par l'écriture d'Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849), et en particulier comme ses poèmes se prêtent idéalement à la musique. L'atmosphère de celui intitulé The Haunted Palace (le Palace hanté) est très particulière et j'ai tenté de la capturer pour cette composition. La pièce débute sur un mode relativement tonal, joyeux, avec de tendres harmonies et mélodies. Puis, vers la fin, lorsque le texte dit 'but evil things, in robes of sorrow, assailed the monarch's high estate' [Trad. libre: mais méchanceté et douleur envahissent la noble demeure du monarque], la musique s'assombrit soudainement et s'éloigne du tonal. The Haunted Palace est dédié à ma fille Kelsey Plog.
