The present concert is the longest and most highly developed of Hertel's three trumpet concertos from the point of view of form. All of them were probably written for a certain Mr. Hese, concerto player at Schwerin court who must have been a great performer: Let us remember that he played this and other pieces, with all their virtuoso runs, quasi-cadenzas, and difficult figuration, without valves! Hertel's orchestration is very transparent and nearly always for strings in three rather than four parts.
